JEREMY MONTEIRO,

CHOK KERONG & BEN SCHOLZ TRIO

Jazzing Around at the Capitol with Jeremy, Chok & Ben

"Jazz trio featuring organ, piano, and drums rooted in swing and the jazz tradition."

The Capitol Jazz Club presents the Jeremy Monteiro, Chok Kerong & Ben Scholz Trio, marking the group’s first appearance together in this configuration. Set within the organ trio tradition, the performance centers on ensemble interplay, groove, and a direct engagement with the core language of jazz. Across two nights, the trio will perform a mix of standards, original compositions, and selected vocal features, shaped by the immediacy of live interaction.

Widely known as Singapore’s “King of Swing,” Jeremy Monteiro performs here on Hammond organ. Though primarily recognized as a pianist, he is also trained as a Hammond organist. His playing is rooted in swing-based jazz, with a focus on time and ensemble direction. As he approaches 50 years as a professional musician, this appearance reflects his continued work in a small group jazz setting.

On piano, Chok Kerong brings a complementary role within the trio. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, he has performed internationally and worked across jazz performance and composition. In this setting, his playing contributes to harmonic structure, counterpoint, and ensemble interaction.

Joining them is Ben Scholz, a drummer whose work spans jazz, soul, and electric fusion. With a background that includes study at the University of North Texas and performance with artists such as Roy Hargrove and Esperanza Spalding, he brings a time-centered, song-focused approach to the group, supporting a range of material from swing and bebop to Latin and funk-influenced grooves.

Together, the trio operates within a format that emphasizes listening, space, and interaction. The music remains grounded in groove and ensemble cohesion, reflecting the working language of the organ trio tradition.
